Nonprofit Transitions Fund Supports Intentional Change

September 2009

While Bay Area nonprofits have been resilient, and even grew during recent recessions, they must radically adjust given the scope of the recent recessions. Some face hard decisions about streamlining, merging, consolidating, or even sunsetting. Growth used to be a barometer of success. In the current economic climate, adaptability is a more pertinent measure. As part of The San Francisco Foundation’s emergency response grantmaking, we invite organizations to apply for a grant from the Nonprofit Transitions Fund, providing $350,000 to support serious planning efforts, consultants, due diligence, and other expenses. Read the What's New article to learn more about the Nonprofit Transitions Fund and how to apply by the Monday, October 26, 2009, deadline.

RFP Announced for Cosco Busan Fund to Support Response and Restoration

August 2008

The San Francisco Foundation announces a special, one-time, round of grants from The San Francisco Foundation Cosco Busan Fund. In the aftermath of the spill, the Foundation quickly responded by committing to support emergency efforts, longer-term restoration of habitats and wetlands damaged by the oil spill, and building the capacity of first response organizations to protect the San Francisco Bay. When we launched the fund in November 2007, we established an initial contribution of $250,000 and have since reached our goal of $500,000.

From the Fund, the Foundation has already awarded grants to seven organizations who served as immediate responders to the spill: Baykeeper, Golden Gate Audubon, International Bird and Research Center, PRBO Conservation Science, Richardson Bay Audubon Center, Save the Bay, and Wildcare. This Request for Proposals is the final step in spending out the remaining $350,000 in the Fund.

The application process is now closed. The Foundation's Board of Trustees will make grant approvals on October 14, 2008, and the grant period begins November 1, 2008.

RFP for San Francisco Bay Fund Grants

June 2008

The San Francisco Foundation welcomed applications for the 2008 grants from the San Francisco Bay Fund. In December 1998, the Foundation received a $3,875,000 monetary payment from a lawsuit settlement related to selenium releases to the San Francisco Bay with the purpose of funding locally based environmental, public health, fisheries, and wildlife research and/or restoration projects to improve water quality or reduce pollution in San Francisco Bay and/or its watershed. With this payment, the Foundation established the San Francisco Bay Fund. Since its inception, the Bay Fund has awarded 85 grants to 45 organizations for a total of $2,934,750.

Eligible candidates have met the following criteria: applicable research, restoration, planning and implementation, and/or monitoring projects of the San Francisco Bay and/ or its watershed.

The application process is now closed. The Foundation's Board of Trustees will make grant approvals on October 14, 2008, and the grant period begins October 1, 2008.
