Bay Area Livable Communities

balci streets jpgThe Bay Area Livable Communities Initiative (BALCI) is a collaboration of community foundations employing their collective strengths, expertise, and resources to help make the Bay Area environmentally healthy, economically strong, and socially equitable. It will be a catalyst, providing leadership to support model place-based projects and policy changes that need to occur in order to create more livable communities.

Many of the issues that impede the creation of more livable communities are regional in nature rather than local. By broadening the scope of foundation work to encompass the region as a whole, the Initiative can address policy reforms at the regional and state level that are necessary to support place-based efforts. BALCI will provide leadership and support to advance more equitable and sustainable land-use and development in the Bay Area by working in concert with public officials, business and civic leaders, community-based organizations, residents, and other stakeholders to identify and promote innovative plans and projects, and to enact strategic policy changes at the local, regional, and state levels.
