Murphy and Cadogan Fine Arts Fellowships

The deadline for the 2009 Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships has now passed. Please read below for complete information about the awards process.

The Awards

The Jack and Gertrude Murphy Fellowships in the Fine Arts and the Edwin Anthony and Adelaine Bourdeaux Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts are multiple awards of $3,500 available to Bay Area fine arts MFA students to underwrite tuition for continued academic study.

Work will be judged by a panel of art professionals. The judges’ decisions are final and will be based solely on merit. There is no entry fee for the competition.

Deadline and Notification

The deadline for the 2009 Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships has passed. Awardees will be notified via email by June 30, 2009.

Eligibility

Applicants must be fine arts MFA students actively pursuing a graduate degree at the Academy of Art University, California College of the Arts, John F. Kennedy University, Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, Stanford University, or the University of California, Berkeley.

Students must have completed at least one semester of graduate study as of January 1, 2009, and must be continuously enrolled in the same program and in good standing through December 31, 2009. The award funds will be sent to the student’s financial aid account via the school’s financial aid office. Fellowship award recipients may be required to provide proof of continuing school enrollment for fall 2009.

Artwork submitted must have been completed by the student in the past two years, since April 1, 2007. Work must be created by a sole applicant; collaborations are not accepted. Previous winners of Murphy or Cadogan Fellowships may not apply again.

Faculty Nomination

All applicants must be nominated by an instructor at one of the eligible institutions. The faculty member does not need to fill out a nomination form, but the student must enter the faculty member’s name and contact information in the online application. While there is no limit to the number of nominations from each school, instructors are encouraged to review each prospective nominee’s portfolio prior to nominating. Students should be nominated for the promise evident in their work and for serious commitment to seek their own voice.

Submitting Work Samples

Students must submit the online application, images, an artist statement, and a numbered list of their work samples as detailed in the online application.

For Film, Video, and Digital Artists

Filmmakers and videomakers must mail or hand-deliver their work samples on a videocassette, CD, or DVD. Digital artists submitting work larger than 1MB should also mail in their work on a CD or DVD. Materials will not be returned, so please do not send originals or one-of-a-kind materials. Please mail or hand-deliver your submission by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009, to:

   Vanessa Camarena-Arredondo
   Murphy and Cadogan Coordinator
   The San Francisco Foundation
   225 Bush Street, Suite 500
   San Francisco, CA 94104

Submissions may be of any length. However, however the panel will view only one five-minute segment or compilation during its initial screening. The segment must be cued or specified accordingly.

Film and video applicants must upload or mail a description of the materials submitted, including:

  1. Student name in the upper left-hand corner
  2. Numbered work sample with your last name (e.g. "01Smith, 02Smith, etc")
  3. Title of work(s)
  4. Nature of each segment, e.g., completed piece or excerpt
  5. Student role in the creation of the piece(s)
  6. Date of completion

If you submit an excerpt, you may provide a brief synopsis of the full work in the work description page. Each CD/DVD/videotape and its case must be clearly labeled with the applicant’s name and a brief description of the contents.

For Visual Artists

Work samples must be uploaded through the online application in the form of JPGs, PowerPoint presentations, or PDFs. Original artwork will not be accepted and slides will not be accepted. Individual images should be 1MB or less in size.

Applicants may submit a total of ten images numbered in the order they want the images projected. Applicants must also upload a numbered checklist of digital images, in a Word document, indicating:

  1. Numbered work sample with your last name (e.g. "01Smith, 02Smith, etc")
  2. Title of work (if any)
  3. Medium
