Angela Brown (Independence High School) to attend the Summer Master in Fine Arts Program in the area of Urban Studies and New Genres at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Michael Doyle (Amador Valley High School) to participate in a ten-day Portrait and Figure Painting in Grisaille workshop in Belmont, CA.
Lynne Finlay Klein (Tamalpais High School) to attend Connecting Collections: Integrating Modern and Contemporary Art into the Classroom held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum, in New York City during summer 2009.

2008 Awardees

Heidi Guibord (Leadership High School) will travel to Accra, Ghana and study fiber design and beading techniques with The Cross Cultural Collaborative.
Kimberley Noel D’Adamo-Muanga (Berkeley H.S. International Baccalaureate Program) to study Art and Ecology at the Sitka Center in Oregon.
Elahe Shahideh (John O'Connell High School) to take a three-week landscape painting intensive at the Florence Academy of Arts in Italy.


2007 Awardees

Mary Estes (Ida B. Wells High School) to attend the summer art program in painting with master artists at Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass, Colorado.
Dan Kryston (San Francisco High School of the Arts) to broaden his theatre studies by attending at the Malta Festival in Warsaw, Poland, as both a participant and a contributor.

2006 Awardees

Ellen Koivisto (San Francisco High School of the Arts) to study design, directing and play analysis in a summer intensive with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival at The Ashland Center in Ashland, Oregon.
Maria Teresa Rode (Lowell High School) to travel to Jiangxi, China to work within the porcelain industry facilities to complete a body of work, and to engage with local and international artists.

Eugene Corr's From Ghost Town to Havana, a feature-length documentary following the lives of six boys as they travel from West Oakland to Havana, Cuba to play baseball with six Centro Habana boys.

Megan Gelstein's Green Shall Overcome, a feature-length documentary about Van Jones and the green collar economy.

Peter Nicks' The Waiting Room, a feature-length documentary film revealing how the health care crisis affects those most at risk during this unique time and how the physical waiting room is a symbol of their plight.

Tamara Perkin's The Trust, a documentary that explores how and why children follow their families into generational cycles of poverty and recidivism.

Ken Paul Rosenthal's Crooked Beauty, an experimental documentary on mental illness.

 

2008 Awardees

Christian Bruno’s Strand: A Natural History of Cinema, a feature-length documentary charting the demise of San Francisco's movie theater culture ($22,500).

Helen De Michiel’s Eating With Your Eyes, a one-hour documentary about Berkeley’s School Lunch Initiative and changing how children eat ($22,500).

Abby Ginzberg’s Cruz Reynoso: A Man for All Seasons, a documentary about the first Hispanic to be appointed to the California Supreme court ($10,000).

Yoav Potash's Crime After Crime, a documentary about the national movement to end domestic violence, and local efforts on behalf of one survivor of abuse ($22,500).

David Weismann’s & Bill Weber’s San Francisco AIDS, a documentary about the Bay Area’s experience of the AIDS epidemic ($22,500).

Fund for Artists Awards

In partnership with local and national arts organizations, the Fund for Artists gave awards to outstanding individual composers, choreographers, visual artists, and playwrights during the first years of the initiative. Ranging in size from $1,500 to $15,000, the awards provided the artists with money, exposure to other artists and arts institutions, and public recognition of their excellence.

Michael Franti, artist, activist, founder of Spearhead

Michael embodies a social movement of justice and activism and being a voice for the vulnerable. By founding the music groups Spearhead and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, as well as the Power to the Peaceful festival, Michael built an underground movement to spread a message of social justice and advocated for underrepresented people. His recent film, I Know I’m Not Alone, highlights the human cost of war and empowers people to utilize their vote and recognize their collective power to impact American foreign policy.

Eugene Rodriguez, founder of Los Cenzontles Mexican Cultural Arts Center

Eugene grew Los Cenzontles from a small music group to the cultural hub it is today in San Pablo by creating transformative experiences for youth, providing focus, training, and purpose that helps them succeed in life. Locally and nationally, he brings visibility to and reverence for Mexican vernacular forms of music and traditional dance.

Malcom has been promoting California’s diverse cultures for more than 30 years, and for bringing voice, visibility, and value to multicultural, multilingual communities.

2007 Awardee

Alonzo King, Choreographer, Artistic Director, and Founder of Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet

Alonzo redefined classical ballet and builds community through his commitment to dance. His racially diverse company transformed the dance scene and our collective perception of dance by combining cultural traditions with classical ballet. His striking and creative performances exhilarate audiences around the world.

2006 Awardee

Michael Morgan, Music Director and Conductor of Oakland East Bay Symphony

Michael for making symphonic music essential to the culture of the East Bay community. He is dedicated to minority access to the arts and arts education, visiting 100 schools every year. More than 20,000 public school students received hands-on music education because of Michael's leadership.

2005 Awardee

Zakarya Diouf, Founder and Director of Diamano Coura West African Dance Company
Zakarya for his vision in unifying the African cultural arts community, for serving as a mentor and educator of young artists, and for his artistic contributions to the development of African-based performing arts.
