The San Francisco Foundation Funds 17 Nonprofits in the Bay Area

New and experienced organizations receive $745,000

(SAN FRANCISCO) – Tuesday, March 11, 2008– The San Francisco Foundation (TSFF) announced today that $745,000 will be granted to Bay Area nonprofits that address philanthropic, nonprofit, and environmental issues in the Bay Area.

The grants are:

Nonprofit Sector


The Agape Foundation 
To increase the competency of the staff of fiscally sponsored organizations in organizational development, financial literacy, fundraising, and sustainability. 
$20,000

Alliance for Justice                        
To offer a variety of workshops, technical assistance, plain-language legal guides, and online resources; offer tailored bi-lingual training to immigrant-serving organizations; and expand its network of local lawyers and accountants trained in laws regarding nonprofit advocacy in the Bay Area Region.

Building Movement Project                   
To support a collaboration between the National Community Development Institute, Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action, Movement Strategy Center, and Building Movement Project to investigate how social change nonprofits are addressing intergenerational leadership change; identify practices that support leadership development across race, class and gender; and help integrate those practices in community-based organizations in the Bay Area region.

Center for Community Benefit Organizations        
To provide core operating support to this Contra Costa County intermediary providing capacity building assistance to nonprofit organizations in that county, specifically coaching for executive directors and board members, and for technical assistance for organizational development.

Craigslist Foundation                    
To support the Nonprofit Boot Camp, a dynamic, workforce-development program that educates and empowers emerging nonprofit leaders and connects them with peers, potential supporters, and valuable industry resources in the Bay Area.

Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training        
To provide small, under-resourced Bay Area grassroots nonprofits with fundraising resources, staff/board training, and peer learning opportunities, all focused on fundraising.

LeaderSpring                           
To support two-year on-the-job fellowships for 30 multi-generational nonprofit leaders and their agencies; offer networking and professional development opportunities to 85 LeaderSpring Alumni; and strengthen LeaderSpring’s organizational capacity.

Movement Strategy Center                    
To strengthen and elevate the leadership of emerging progressive leaders and organizations within the broader progressive movement in the Bay Area and beyond through training in strategy, collaboration, and sustainability; connecting leaders locally and regionally; and promoting intergenerational learning.
$25,000

Nonprofit Centers Network                  
To support a Bay Area workshop series focused on models of sharing staff, technology, space, administrative, and client services that can serve as earned-income sustainability strategies.
$15,000

Northern California Community Loan Fund          
To build a suite of financial and real estate decision-making tools for facilities strategic planning and to evaluate alternative ways of providing course work, information, and curriculum materials to clients in the future.
$25,000

Philanthropic Sector

Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy        
To establish donor giving circles in Bay Area Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian communities.
$150,000 (over three years)

Horizons Foundation                        
To focus on capacity building for LGBT organizations to grow their individual fundraising and increase support to organizations rooted in and serving LGBT people in communities of color.
$150,000 (over three years)

Latino Community Foundation                
To focus on expanding its young professional giving circle, foundation support, and legacy gifts from individuals to support its Latino Children and Youth Initiative.

Environment

Bay Area Local Initiative Support Corporation        
To develop the framework for a strategic acquisition program to ensure that transit-oriented development includes equitable outcomes including affordable housing and community-serving facilities.

Nonprofit Housing Association of Northern California    
To support the Great Communities Collaborative by providing expertise and capacity to ensure affordable housing is an integral part of transit-oriented development plans.
$20,000

Urban Land Institute                    
To support Transit-Oriented Development Opportunity Site Tours and Technical Assistance Panels culminating in a day-long “TOD Marketplace” connecting cities, developers, advocates, and other stakeholders about transit-oriented development opportunities.
$15,000

Working Partnerships USA                   
To, in collaboration with Greenbelt Alliance and the Great Communities Collaborative, develop and implement a policy framework for North San Jose that will encourage public transit through the design and development of housing, retail, parks, and schools.
