Last June, the Obama administration announced an historic new policy directive – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – which will allow approximately 1.4 million immigrants nationwide to apply for temporary relief from deportation and work authorization. The administration will begin accepting these applications this month.
Today it is estimated that at least 60,000 Bay Area students will be eligible for this deferred action. Most students will rely on school records to document their arrival in the U.S. by the age of 16, continuous presence in the U.S. for at least five years, and educational status.
Anticipating the workload required to verify large numbers of student records on a very tight timeline, we have invited Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC) to brief district and county superintendents on Tuesday, August 28th on how they can be prepared. We will have an outstanding team of immigration attorneys and students to answer your questions about eligibility requirements, explain what school records you will need to provide, and connect you to reputable legal service agencies who can help your students with the application process.
Please contact Anna Karrer Manley at aek@sff.org if you are interested in attending.
