The San Francisco Foundation, in partnership with Northern California Grantmakers and Cal Humanities, will be hosting the first screening in our new quarterly Documentary Film Series, featuring films supported by The San Francisco Foundation’s Bay Area Documentary Fund.

Join us on Wednesday, June 27th, as the Documentary Film Series kicks off by a screening We Were Here and a discussion with filmmaker David Weissman. We Were Here chronicles San Francisco’s early response to the AIDS epidemic. Ninety minutes in length, the film has won recent acclaim from both the Sundance Festival and the Independent Spirit Awards.

By investing in the early production of documentary films, The San Francisco Foundation catapults Bay Area visionaries into theaters throughout the region and nationwide. Through a unique lens and powerful storytelling, film has the power to lift our imagination, change our perspective, and bring to light critical issues that compel us to take action.

Documentary films are an incredibly powerful tool for telling stories and advocating for pressing social justice issues. This new film series will provide an opportunity to meet the filmmakers of some of the most celebrated documentaries to come out of the Bay Area.
