A report released by The Foundation Center examines nearly $237 million in foundation grantmaking to support Oakland and East Bay nonprofits in 2008.

The report, entitled “Key Facts on Foundation Giving for Oakland,” examined a sample of foundations throughout the Bay Area and the country and breaks down key areas where money was given. Results show:

  • Elementary/secondary education and services (31%) and human services (17%) are the most funded subjects.
  • The vast majority (79%) of grantmaking was provided by foundations within California.
  • Amongst California foundations, The San Francisco Foundation ranks sixth in funding in the region.
