Awards and Scholarships 2008

Includes our Community Leadership Awards, Koshland Young Leader Awards, and Art Awards Program.

Community Leadership Awards

Each year our Community Leadership Awards give us an opportunity to showcase the depth of commitment and range of talent among Bay Area community leaders. Chosen for their innovation and impact, as well as their initiative and inspiration, all of our award winners have enhanced the lives of Bay Area residents in tangible ways. Whether individuals or organizations, the 2008 winners stand out not only for their visionary ideas and meaningful results, but also for setting examples and creating models for other communities to follow.

This cohort of honorees conveys a strong message about the importance of bringing voice and visibility to multilingual, multicultural communities through literature; preventing violence and helping women and children rebuild their lives after domestic violence; building unity, alliances, and social movements to forge positive change; and inspiring youth and civil rights activism for a healthier, stronger future.

The 2008 Community Leadership Award Winners:

Van Jones, $10,000
Van’s galvanizing work in youth and civil rights activism is inspirational. He has led policy reform campaigns that tackled critical issues within the Bay Area and nationally, paving the way for a stronger, smarter, more just, greener future. With his holistic focus on youth, the economy, and the environment, Van is creating innovative solutions that will change the world.
In the spirit of the Robert C. Kirkwood Award, made for an individual in recognition of outstanding community service, commitment, and inspired leadership.

Malcolm Margolin, $10,000
Malcolm has promoted California’s diverse cultures through literature and cultural events for more than three decades. His book “The Ohlone Way” is a seminal text on California Indian history and culture, and he has brought enlightenment to generations of our state’s young people and due deference to California’s indigenous people. We honor Malcolm for bringing voice, visibility, and value to multicultural, multilingual communities.
In the spirit of the Helen Crocker Russell Award, made for an under-recognized, mature artist who has made a significant and ongoing contribution in the Bay Area.

Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, $10,000
For more than 50 years, Betita has built unity and alliances across traditional racial and gender lines. Her strong spirit continually brings together diverse coalitions to forge positive change across many communities. Her dedication to Chicana history leaves a legacy of progressive activism for future generations. We honor Betita for being a selfless and inspirational advocate for vulnerable people in the Bay Area and around the world.
In the spirit of The San Francisco Foundation Award, made for an individual demonstrating exemplary commitment to improving human relations in the Bay Area.

Asian Women’s Shelter
, $20,000
Asian Women’s Shelter was the first Bay Area shelter – and one of only three nationally – dedicated to assisting Asian women and children escape family violence and rebuild their lives free of violence. Twenty years later, providing services in 31 languages, it is a model program that is preventing violence and working toward cultural change through its innovative, creative, community approach.
In the spirit of the John R. May Award, made for organizational initiatives in response to a significant contemporary problem.
