Tips and Traps for the Advisor Post Prop 8

Join The San Francisco Foundation and Horizons Foundation for an interactive discussion as we examine how to advise clients in a world of legal uncertainty.

Bring your client questions to discuss real life situations that are appearing as advisors move into even more uncharted territory.

Discussion questions will include:

  • How do the differences in relationship recognition matter from an advisor's point of view, in connection with legal, tax, and financial planning?

  • Are you planning for an individual client or a couple?

  • Should married couples also register as domestic partners?

  • What are the differences between state and federal marriage laws?

  • What are the primary advantages and disadvantages to status categories (i.e., not married, registered, married) from a planning standpoint?

  • How should you analyze and plan for couples married outside of California?

Panelists:

  • Deb L. Kinney, Estate Attorney, DLK LawG roup PC
  • Chris Kollaja, Partner, A.L. Nella & Company
  • Barry R. Taylor, Portfolio Manager, Bingham, Osborn & Scarborough, LLC
