Let's Talk About Race!

The San Francisco Foundation and the Akonadi Foundation invite you to a funders’ presentation and discussion on race and opportunities for philanthropy, on Monday, October 19, 2009.

john a. powell, professor and executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University, will provide an overview of the continuing role that race and ethnicity play in the economic, social, and policy practices in the United States.

john a. powell is an internationally recognized authority in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, and topics relating to race, ethnicity, poverty, and the law. He has written and consulted extensively on a number of issues including structural racism, racial justice and regionalism, concentrated poverty and urban sprawl, opportunity-based housing, voting rights, affirmative action in the United States, South Africa, and Brazil, racial and ethnic identify, spirituality and social justice, and the needs of citizens in a democratic society.

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity was established at The Ohio State University in 2003, with a national and global goal of deepening the understanding of the causes and consequences of and solutions to racial and ethnic hierarchy and disparity with a focus on racially and ethnically marginalized populations. Its ultimate goal is to stimulate and facilitate transformative change to bring about a society that is fair and just for all people. Current program activities include Talking About Race; Structural Racism; Opportunity Communities/Housing; Education; GIS/Maps; and Research.
