990s Do Matter: A Training for San Francisco Foundation Grantees
NOTE: Registration for this workshop has closed.
The San Francisco Foundation is proud to sponsor two training sessions about the IRS’ changes to the Form 990, on Thursday, December 4, 2008. Capacity is limited to invited grantees, and registration is now closed for both sessions. If you did not receive a confirmation email, then you are not registered for the training.
The content will be the same at both the morning session (8:30 a.m. to 12 noon) and the afternoon session (1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.). To accommodate as many organizations as possible, we ask that each invited organization send only one individual to one training session.
Both sessions will be presented by Eve Borenstein, author and instructor, who has taught Form 990 essentials for almost two decades to nonprofit organization managers and consultants, as well as to the CPA community. She co-chairs the American Bar Association Form 990 Task Force and helped the IRS develop the redesigned Form.
Background:
The IRS has completely overhauled the Form 990 effective for the year begun after December 31, 2007. The new 990s expect each nonprofit organization to now report on certain governing policies and procedures, and goes well beyond the form's previous narrow focus on organizational finances. In short, the new 990 requires each nonprofit organization to explain what each organization did during the year, under whose legal management, and under what internal policies and procedures.
It is imperative that all nonprofit organizations begin planning to accommodate the many operational changes the new Form either demands or encourages.
Training Objectives:
Geared specifically to executive directors, board members, treasurers, and accounting staff, this seminar is designed to provide an easy and practical understanding of the important functions and implications of Form 990 reporting. Its goals are to educate participants in an engaging presentation (addressing both the current Form 990/990-EZ and the upcoming Redesigned 990) so that they may:
- Learn the key components of the Forms that provide "information to the public" (i.e., are not just "for the IRS")
- Review the challenges nonprofits commonly face in completing the Form
- Understand how to put the organization's "best foot forward" in reporting programs, executive's compensation, governance and fundraising activities
- Learn how the IRS has expanded the current Form's "meatiest" parts and brought some answers up to a front "summary page"
- Review the transition schedule that postpones small organizations' use of the Redesigned Form 990 if they are willing to use the Form 990 EZ
Both sessions are now closed.
